1970 Avon Paperback edition of The Children of the Dream by Bruno Bettelheim. 380 pages This book explores the communal child-rearing practices in Israeli kibbutzim and their psychological effects on children. Bettelheim studied a specific kibbutz in 1964, analyzing how children were raised collectively rather than by individual parents. He observed that this upbringing fostered altruism, dedication, and social cohesion, but also led to a flattening of personality and a loss of intimacy and individuality. His study compares these methods to traditional Western parenting, questioning whether communal upbringing might offer advantages over conventional family structures. From the front and back cover: The widely controversial book about communal child rearing and group education . No more neglected children! The children of the dream introduces a revolutionary concept of communal child rearing that produces few juvenile delinquents and very few emotional disturbances. Babies are separated from their mothers at five days old, weaned at six months, and raised through adolescence in an environment in which their contemporaries prove far more important in their emotional development than any adult.
